"Radio Heart, play a sad song for me. One from the heart, so she'll come back to me. Radio Heart, send her my love for me."
Radio Heart
Gary Numan's UK Chart Placings
Compiled By Markus Dietrich

These two charts, better than anything else, profoundly illustrate the effect of Gary's war with British radio and with the BBC in particular. As you'll see, he starts out "number one with a bullet", but slowly, gradually, begins to do worse and worse in the charts. Parallelling this decline is a reduction in the radio airplay allotted to him. Gary admits to two reasons for this decline. First, he doesn't write singles, he writes albums. Second, during a ten year period (1984 to 1994) he got "boring". This changed with Sacrifice of course.

(Paraphrased from the liner notes from HERE I AM - circa 1994)

With 34 UK hit singles bearing his name, Gary Numan is the 18th most successful singles artist in the history of British pop music. His 20 hit LP's also rank him amongst the Top 30 all-time album artists. With over 10 million record sales world-wide, numerous record industry awards and acknowledgement as the first artist to put out a music video for general release, it's plain to see that Gary Numan is not your average run of the mill pop star - face it, how many do you know that have their own record company and possess a full pilot's licence? Now regarded as one of Europe's foremost display pilots, Gary still records and tours to this day. He might not be the darling of the media but there's no denying his impact and influence, particularly on the New Romantic and Electro scenes, that has seen him not only outsell but also outlast most of his so-called 'peers'.
