A Question Of Faith

Wayne Knisley's Story

I was first introduced to Gary through a girl down the street. She played The Pleasure Principle for me and after three songs, I had her turn it off. It was horrible. And I had not even heard 'Cars' yet. To me at that time his music was monotonous, irritating and boring.

I was at that age of adolescent confusion, going through sexual identities crisis as well as identify what category of music I wanted to be associated with.

My brother, who is 8 years my senior, was and still is, in to fossil rock music. I, to this date, still know songs of the past, which is unusal for someone in my era.

One day I was out shopping with the girl who played The Pleasure Principle for me. I came across a shop called "The Wherehouse", and they had a huge display for Telekon.

I debated whether or not to buy it, 'cos I thought it might be just like The Pleasure Principle, ie: monotonous and boring. But I bought it, rushed home, played it on the turntable and loved it. The Pleasure Principle wound up being the 4th album I bought.

'Telekon' was absolutly wonderful. Of course when I listened to it, it was dark, dreary and raining outside, so this album was perfect for the mood. 'Telekon' sparked my obsession with Gary's music and have been a avid collector of Numan CD's, albums, photos, etc. The list goes on and on.

When I want to be alone and relax, I can put a Numan album on the system and just go into my own world. His music and lyrics are beyond comparison and is ususally ahead of everyone else.

I was able to see Gary in California on his I, Assassin tour, which was my first Gary Numan concert, and twice I saw him in the UK, (84-85). I just made a trip out there (June 96), but was disappointed to see that he toured in April. I was hoping to catch a gig, whilst in England but was unsuccessful.

I guess I can say that my favourite song is, 'Strange Charm' and 'Slow Car to China', plus many more, too many to count. My favourite album is, Berserker and Warriors, I suppose. They ususally change from time to time.

My overall CD collection runs in the couple hundreds, with Gary at about 20% of the total number.

I wish that Gary would do just an instrumental album of completed songs, like a compilation album, with dance, ballads, etc. His musical genius is such that, I'd like to sit back and enjoy the music sometimes.
