Poetry And Power
"Night Shift"
Michael Knapp

They think they've got me
What were the reasons?
It's just a snow job
What were they thinking?

I'm on the Night Shift
My favorite station
They call me 'lucky'
I call them liars

They framed the junkie
He said it wasn't true
Chased him through the alley
Down to 'isolation' tunnel

In through another way
A door marked 'sympathy'
They made him take it
He suffered like 'no-one'

I'm on the Night Shift
I sleep when others dance
Just like machines favour
'Any time is better now'

Just watching you as you go
They never thought I could
Automatic more than feeling
I'll learn it all sometime

Closing down another day
'Do politicians ever think?'
Some day I could take over
And win the hearts of many

I'm on the Night Shift
One day this could be mine
I'd wipe the tears from everyone
Like a mythical 'saviour'
