This was the first of two studio albums Gary recorded while signed to an allegedly 5-album deal with IRS Records. Gary's association with IRS was plagued by a multitude of problems, including studio interference in the creative process, poor tour support, poor promotion, and all the other stuff you may have read elsewhere. Despite it all, this album is one of Gary's strongest post-Beggars efforts, featuring driving guitars and a reduced dependency on synthesizers and studio magic tricks.
Note: The UK and US releases are notably different. The latter omits the tracks "Hunger" and "Young Heart", and includes two tracks from Gary's 1984 album Berserker, "My Dying Machine" (remixed) and "Child With The Ghost", while "Devious" is mixed differently. Both albums are hard to find and currently out-of-print. The UK version is generally regarded as the better of the two, but the "My Dying Machine" remix alone is worth the price for the US edition.
