A Review of "The Premier Hits" by Dave Veitch of The Calgary Sun

Peculiar little chap, that Gary Numan. First he puts out a duff punk-rock album; then a trio of cold but catchy synth-drone records that established his neurotic-robotic persona; then three more albums whose songs sounded like awful Japan outtakes.

Although this 18-track compilation is weighted too heavily toward his inferior 1981-83 singles, Premier Hits captures Numan's eccentric musical vision and contains a handful of post-punk classics; the spooky Down In The Park, the android love song Are 'Friends' Electric?, and two versions of his splendid hit single, Cars.

Of possible interest to new-wave aficionados; highly recommended for automatons.
