In the spring of 1996, Gary Numan guest-hosted a program on the UK's Channel Four called "Not Fade Away". On it, he presented a series of his favourite videos by his favourite artists. Here are links to some of those artists.

Depeche Mode Produced by John "Saint John" Simpson On "Not Fade Away", Gary Numan mentioned that Depeche Mode's "Walking In My Shoes" was perhaps the most influential song of his career. Indeed, it's not hard to see that this song has a lot in common with... well, perhaps every single song on the Sacrifice and Exile albums. |

Jesus Jones Produced by Jason Lee Gary was recently asked which three albums he'd want with him if he was stuck on a desert island. One of the three was "Perverse" by Jesus Jones. He also featured FOUR Jesus Jones videos on his "Not Fade Away" appearance, describing them as very forward-looking and as not relying on what has gone before. |

David Bowie Produced by Robert Goodale Bowie has long been a Numan influence, from the late '70's onward. And although it would seem that Mr. Bowie doesn't particularly like Mr. Numan, the latter included the recent video "Heart's Filthy Lesson" on his "Not Fade Away" appearance. Alas, while I'm a big Bowie fan as well, this video (and this song) sucked the big one. |

Nine Inch Nails Produced by Jason Patterson When I was attending SAIT (taking a radio broadcasting course), my buddy Craig Harris was a big NIN fan, and of course he knew I was a huge Numan fan. We would continually needle each other about how AWFUL the other's hero's music was. It's therefore rather ironic to us to find that in fact, Gary Numan and Trent Reznor admire each other. Gary played NIN's "Head Like A Hole" on "Not Fade Away" and has spoken highly of NIN in other interviews. And, NIN has allegedly recorded a cover of Numan's Metal for inclusion on the upcoming tribute album, Random. Cool! |

The Mission Produced by Bryan McPhail I don't know a whole lot about this band. Gary did feature them on "Not Fade Away", and recently has said that he and Mission leader Wayne Hussey plan to get together and collaborate some time in the future, and possibly even form a band together. Most sources seem to confirm that the band has now officially broken up, but some maintain that it's not over yet for The Mission. |

The Sisters Of Mercy Produced by Ian Grimstead Another band I don't know much about, but at one time also featured Wayne Hussey on guitars. It's another Numan fave band that got played on "Not Fade Away" that has a thriving underground fan base. |
These are links to some of Gary & Gemma's other favourite bands. If you know of any other links that should go here, please email them to me.

Gravesite: The Official Nash The Slash Web Site Produced by Nash The Slash The official website for Nash The Slash, the bandaged Canadian violinist who has supported Gary onstage and even contributed his skills to a few studio album songs. Site contains several mentions of Gary including a photo of Gary and Nash onstage in 1982. Gary says that there are good people and bad people when you tour: Nash was great. |

Siouxsie And The Banshees Produced by rlw All I know about this band is that they've been around for 20 years and they recently broke up. I have no idea whether or not Gary likes 'em or not (I think I read somewhere that he does), but I do know that it's a fave of his girlfriend Gemma O'Neill. |
Over the years, a number of bands have covered various Numan songs, with varying degrees of success. Here is a set of links to a number of those bands. If you've got any additional links to other bands that have covered Numan, please email them to me and I'll add them here. I'm especially looking for homepages for Nancy Boy, Robert Palmer, Bill Sharpe, & Radio Heart and/or Dadadang.

Christian Death Produced by Phil Jeffcock I know next to nothing about this band, other than they were known to occassionally cover "Down In The Park" when performing live. If you have more info, send it to me and I'll put it here. |

Dramatis Produced by John Marques Carramao Dramatis was formed by four members of Gary's early band, namely Chris Payne, Denis Haines, Cedric Sharpley, and Rrussell Bell. They went on to form Dramatis, and put out an album called For Future Reference. Alas, the album fared poorly and the band broke up shortly afterward. They don't QUITE fall into this category (bands that have covered Gary), but they're included here because Gary provided vocals for perhaps their best song, "Love Needs No Disguise". |

The Foo Fighters Produced by Chris Carman The Foo Fighters were born of the ashes of Kurt Cobain's Nirvana, and recently recorded an outstanding cover of Gary Numan's "Down In The Park" for the X-Files CD, Songs In The Key Of X. A relatively new band, it has quickly established itself and has a loyal core of devoted fans. |

Kenickie Produced by Bremstrahlung X Jones Fiercely intelligent teenage Sunderland fourpiece who are one part Manic Street Preachers and one part Ronnettes, with vodka to taste. Music started up as euphoric pop-punk, but swiftly changed to incorporate influences from Phil Spector to (surprise!) Gary Numan, as seen by their recent cover of "I'm An Agent". |

Marilyn Manson Produced by shleestak In 1994, Marilyn Manson covered Gary's "Down In The Park" as a single b-side. This is a page dedicated to the shock-rock band Marilyn Manson, containing an extensive history and other info to satiate your Mansonian curiosity. Welcome to the Land O' Manson! |

Shampoo Produced by Peter Weinzettl
In 1996, this girl band released a single called "Girl Power",
which included a b-side cover of "Cars", which (sorry, gotta say
it) truly sucked. But hey, it's still a collectible.
This link is actually to a web-chat board. This is temporary: the
full-blown web site is currently undergoing reconstruction and should
be back soon.

What's the point of having your own web site if you can't have a little fun with it? Following are some other artists that I find almost, but not quite, as cool as Gary Numan.

Big Country Produced by Robert Oliver I seem to really get hooked on "unique" music, that sounds nothing like anything any other artist has ever done. Such is the case again here, with a site devoted to the greatest Scottish-rock band of all time, BIG COUNTRY. Ironically enough, not one of the band members is from Scotland - one was even born in Timmins, Ontario, CANADA! |

Enya Produced by Dave Allum Another artist who's got that "certain something" that keeps fans coming back for more, and more, and more. Plus, at least from my red-blooded Canadian-boy perspective, she's far more attractive than Gary. :-) All the latest news is available at this site, including reviews of her latest album, The Memory Of Trees. |

The Moody Blues Produced by Ann Marie Chartrand The Moody Blues are one of a very small handful of bands that have scored top-ten hits in each of three consecutive decades. I grew up listening to the Moodies, and their music is absolutely unique, and absolutely first-rate - as is this site, which is extremely professional in every respect. |

The Tragically Hip Produced by CIMtegration, Ltd. Singer Gordon Downie describes The Hip as "just another bar band". If that's the case, then they're the greatest bar band in the history of music. By far the most popular band in Canada, they offer nothing less than straight-ahead rock and roll with just a dash of the blues: they're definitely "Ahead By A Century". |

Chris Whitley Produced by Les Rayburn Chris Whitley released one of the most critically acclaimed albums of this decade back in 1991. Called Living With The Law, it has quickly become an essential part of any serious music listener's collection. Although the follow-up album, Din Of Ecstasy, was not as well received, Chris' fans are every bit as devoted as Gary's are. Like Gary, he plans to release an album in early 1997, this one tentatively titled Terra Incognito. |
