From SonicNet

(I should point out that this is "from" my perspective - my nickname is "Exile", while at least three other Numan site authors also joined us: Chris Schumann was "whizkid", Michael J. Damrath was "Damrat", and Rob Eggleston was "rob-a2")

My Nickname is Exile
=== Room Log: suck on this ===

...Phloem joined suck
<eric> <eric> you say you don't believe in God and that's fine, but why do you feel the need to trash the Christian belief on almost every album?

<GaryNuman> Pas- There are still talking about Juky but it seems to me that it will be unllikely as there is still no label to release product but that seems much more likely now- so a tour later in the year is very likely.

<GaryNuman> Thank you march
<MarchHare> Gary...stop covering your face
> Gary: more likely? You're definitely having productive discussions with some labels then?
<SonicMod> YES PEOPLE TAKE IT SLOW. THIS IS A WWW CHAT AND I CAN'T CONTROLL THE FLOW OF THINKS . SO KEEP THAT IN MIND

<GaryNuman> Is Victoria in Canada?
<descent> heh
> yes Gary
<descent> i hope so
<GaryNuman> Kim- I like the term very much
<AFE> Gary...You sound like the Exile talks are wearing you down and you just want to release the record..is this atitude due to your USA trip or did you feel this way before you left ?
<Phloem> Yeah. It's an hour and a half west of Vancouver by ferry, or 40 minutes if you take the helicopter over.

> Gary: what's your current asking price regarding the sale of your Harvard? (grin!)
<GaryNuman> The reception to me here is much warmer than england yes

<paul1> but does your wig no come off gary when doing stunts
> <--- would definitely take Marlene for a ride...
> Paul1: that's no wig
<Marlene> I thought so....in more ways than one!
<Damrat> Gary: You've always been too hard on yourself about your guitar skills. I think your guitar playing is great. Would you consider highlighting yourguitar playing more?
<GaryNuman> no, nothing , There is talk of me test flying an air plane for a magazine article- but I go home tomorrow so it seems un likely
> Marlene: now you're getting it
<Marlene> be nice or leave!

<GaryNuman> Damarat- yeah the Exile album features more guitar than any other album I have done for 10 years
<Dale> Gary: How long are you in the states for?
<Michael> You're a J.G. Ballard. Did you see the film _Crash_? What did you think?
<Marlene> laughing at Joey
<paul1> whats anass!
<MarchHare> Gary, are you trying to break away from the "80s icon" image?
<Michael> J.G. Ballard _fan_, I meant.
<Damrat> Gary: Wonderful, is it You playing, or someone else?
<GaryNuman> probably not neal- I am not that interested in writing about it anymore although I am still a fan of star trek
> Gary: the latest rumour on NuZone is that Trent Reznor will be remixing Exile. Any truth to that rumour?
<Kim> I'll be in England this summer--are you touring there at that time?
<GaryNuman> Crash was banned in England
<Marlene> GARY: how many songs on EXILE? What will be the first single?
<Michael> Are you going to see Crash here, then?
<eric> <eric> why the obsession with trahing the christian faith?
<Michael> Skip that last question.
<Damrat> I never felt that Gary trashed any faith.

<GaryNuman> ex- not at the moment- although I am attempting to talkto trent about a number of things
<Marlene> me either
<Dale> Me neither
<whizkid> ?
<loubobjason> me neither
<whizkid> test
<GaryNuman> eric- I dont trash Christian faith
<Michael> Gary, what new bands are you listening to these days?
<Marlene> hello? "are you mocking me?" haha
<loubobjason> but what about D.Sylvian?
<godawful> Gary did you ever like Black Sabbath?
<Kim> On what is he basing the Chirstian-bashing?
<GaryNuman> I think that its interesting to considar the possibilities that God and the devil are one in the same and that Heavan and hell are one in the same but as far as faith is concerned - of any kind, I envy people that have it
<eric> <eric> but god does make an appearance on almost every c-d in a negative light
<GaryNuman> no I never liked Black Sabbath
<godawful> GOOD
> well said, Gary
...AFE left suck
<Michael> What new bands are you tening to these days?
<MarchHare> Gary, are you trying to break away from the "80s icon" image?
<Marlene> whiz: what do you see?

<Michael> listening to...
<eric> <eric> very good...you answered my question ...thank you
<Haven> Negative? I doubt it
<whizkid> Marlene: He looks cramped and uncomfortable. Not much room to move.
<Cooper> Gary, I have always been curious on your guitar setup, I have seen pictures and videos and have always seen you playing a Gibson, what amps and effects do you use?
<Phloem> Negative? No. Questioning? Sure.
<Dale> Gary: Any chance of recording without keyboards in the future
> Gary: how is the flying career going these days? Given your hectic schedule, I'd wonder when you'd have time for much flying anymore...
<Marlene> thanks whiz!
<Kim> Who are your influences? It seems you've influenced many.
<MarchHare> marlene, him talking, although he keeps putting his arm in front of his face!
<GaryNuman> Gravity Kills is my favorite, NIN, some prodigy some chemical brothers,
<kaleid> Gary, speaking of Trent Reznor, I'm sure you're aware of his past troubles with TVT records...would that fact detur you from signing to TVT if they indeed were interested
<Neal> Gary, Is imitation the sincerest form of flattery? That is what do you think of Marylyn Manson remakes et al...
<GaryNuman> Gary- yeah its possibl;e, not soon though
<Marlene> GARY: what do you think of "The Perfect Drug?"
<Michael> You made electronic music easy to like by supplying vocals and melodies. The new electronica doesn't do that. Can it ever be as popular by staying that course?
<Cooper> Gravity kills-St Louis band, where Im from
<whizkid> Gemma's there. Looking for ginger ale apparently...
<Damrat> Gary: I hear echoes of your music in alot of places. You've influenced more people than give you credit. Does that bother you?
<Marlene> GARY: what do you think of Marilyn Manson?
...EVB joined suck
<Dale> Gary on TVT? That would be incredible!!
<Dale> My favorite artist on my favorite label..could it get better?
<GaryNuman> Kim- i guess I am influenced by the things that I like to one degree or another

<eric> <eric> what would you be doing if you weren't a rock star?
<Dale> Gary: What musical equipment are you using these days?
<whizkid> Gary: What kinds of music where in the house when you were a child?
<GaryNuman> No, everyone has problems with their label at one time or another - every artist has a differant urelationship
<rob-a2> Gary---After the comments you have made in the past..do u feel it is worthwile to release exile via the same mechanism as the "Excellent but un-noticed" Sacrifice..
<Kim> Do you enjoy any jazz or blues?
<GaryNuman> cool dale- but I am not on it yet'
> Gary: got much time for your flying career lately? Doing any airshows this summer?
<GaryNuman> rob- its notr a perfect route but with out a deal I have no other route to take I guess
<Michael> GARY: You made electronic music easy to like by supplying vocals and melodies. The new electronica doesn't do that. Can it ever be as popular by staying that course?
<GaryNuman> Kim- not really no
<eric> <eric> how did you feel artistically after "outland" and "machine and soul"
<GaryNuman> exile- I have one in May - but after that I am too busy with music and a film to do more
<Damrat> I always felt I Assassin was your jazz album.

> Gary, with Beggar's Banquet releasing Premier Hits and Random this year, what are the chances of re-signing with *THEM*?
<rob-a2> I agree...but it will break my heart to see it fall on the same ground as Sacrifice...Everyone I played it to thought it was good..and no-one had any idea who it was by or where to buy it...
<Dale> Gary: THANK YOU for changing my life in 1979!
<GaryNuman> cooper- I havent heard their stuff no, but I have heard of the band
<badazizi> hello
<Eduardo> cars
<GaryNuman> exile- none sadly- they dont want me
> that's nuts... they're making so much money with you yet they don't want you? That's AMAZINGLY ignorant and short-sighted.
<eric> <eric> but beggar's owes you----BIG TIME !!!
<badazizi> What are your all time favorite songs?
<Kim> Do you remember "Urgh, A Music War?"
<Neal> I consider "Down in the Park" my all time single favorite song.. Anyone agree?
<Damrat> Gary: BB has made alot of money off of you, I c'tgine them not wanting you.
<GaryNuman> I think we could do a better job of exile then we did of sacrafice but its still less than perfect
<Dale> Gary: Do you listen to tapes that bands send you?

<badazizi> Have you got plans on coming to Brazil?
<GaryNuman> ex- yes random is an entirely differant album- differant concept

<loubobjason> Gary: Do you have close friends that are as famous as you?

<Haven> Gary. Do the guitars add to the darkness or is something else in the instrumentation?
<EVB> Dale, you aren't the only one - "replicas" made a HIGE impression on me in '79!

<Kim> If you do move to the US--move to Florida
<Dale> Is gary gone?
> <-- can't wait to see Marlene's page now
<GaryNuman> exile - its a possiblity I was trying to keep things more simple by having one label that took me on for the world rather than breaking it down to individual terratories which makes ita nightmare to pull to gether and keep track of.

<Neal> DEVO YES!!
<Grendel> gary, any plans to come to Australia to promote the album?
> Gary: Phloem may correct me if I'm wrong, but Nettwerk Records, though Canadian, has distribution muscle in the US as well. Might be worth a thought if nothing else turns up. They're Sarah McLaughlin's label (sp?)

<Woodroe> Gary: Congratulations!
<GaryNuman> okay I will bear it in mind thank you very much
<rob-a2> ----> Is Beggars Banquet completely uninterested in signing you up in the UK ?

<Phloem> Exile: That's M-C-L-A-C-H-L-A-N, you numbskull. And yes, they've got an awful lot of clout in Canada, and have a distribution deal with Arista in the United States. From my own experience, I think Gary'd fit in quite well, though you'd probably have to listen to the tribute Decadence to see why I say that.
> sorry Phloem... grin!
<GaryNuman> eric-yes - somedays , then sometimes no
<Dale> GARY, what musical equipment are you using these days
<Verlaine> @--->--- @--->--- @--->--- bouquet of roses to Gary and the future Mrs Numan
