Let's Meet

The following tables contain information on each venue (maps, directions, area hotels, etc.), mostly contributed by viewers such as yourself (that's a hint). For each show, we're trying to get together a pre-concert meeting so we can all meet each other. For many of us, this will represent not only our first opportunity to see Gary perform live (or at least in a very long time), it will also be our first shot at meeting EACH OTHER. This is an opportunity that, I feel, should not be missed.

If you plan on attending any of these shows, and would like to get together before the show for coffee, beer, chitchat, or whatever, please drop me a line. I'll add your name to the chart below. Please note that at the outset, I'm suggesting "front doors of venue" as the meeting place because I do not know any of these cities. If you are a resident and can suggest a place (coffee shop, lounge, whatever) that would be suitable for a group of 10-20 Numanoids, that is within WALKING DISTANCE of the venue, let me know and I'll update this chart accordingly.

Some photos of people going to the meetings are now available. Be sure to check back here often: the meeting location and times are subject to change!

9:30 Club is 2 blocks north of the U Street/Cardozo Metro (green/yellow line subway), DC Metro service ends at midnight. It's a drinking establishment but ID required only for alcohol purchase - the show is all-ages. The bouncers sometimes check for recorders and cameras.

Easy access to subway but parking is available through the club for $5 and is a guarded lot - it fills up quickly so arrive EARLY. It's not a great neighborhood to park on the street...

Polly's (phone +1 202-265-8385) is a restaurant at 1342 U St. N.W. (between 13th and 14th St. N.W. on "U" Street), 5 blocks from the 9:30 Club. Chat, snack, drink, make merry!

For more on parking, directions, driving tips, etc., Rick recommends you check the 9:30 Club website which has loads of info. Hotels in the area include the Holiday Inn and Ramada Inn on 14th St. N.W. and a Days Inn on Rhode Island Ave N.W., which are reputed to have very good rates for downtown DC. They're not close to metro trains but taxi service is omnipresent in DC.

Map Available = venue, = meeting. And, a cool subjective map provided by Mike Sugimoto.

The Starfish Room is pretty small with a section of chairs, benches and tables, and a floor area in front of the very small stage. Sound can be excellent unless they push the volume. It can get very hot and very smoky and the beer is expensive. It's right downtown, and most hotels, hostels, YMCA, restaurants, etc. are all walking distance through safe, well-traveled areas.

Parking on the streets downtown is generally not a problem on a Thursday night but we recommend you find a spot after 6pm. The meters are in operation until 8pm (two hour maximum), then it's free after that. There are also plenty of parking lots in the area. Heads Up: there is a Bob Dylan/Van Morrison/Joni Mitchell concert running at GM Place on the same night: this shouldn't affect parking near the Starfish Room but it will affect local traffic (which also means busier bars and restaurants).

The Rose & Thorne is a few blocks from the Starfish Room, on the north side of Richards midway between Robson and Georgia. Very cool atmosphere with numerous rooms and hallways, and big stuffed chairs and sofas to relax in. And they pour a great pint of Guinness!

Berbati's Pan is located in the nicer part of Portland's Old Town, with a capacity of 350 people. It's a comfortable small club, and true to Portland serves several fabulous locally brewed beers. It is connected to a restaurant called simply Berbati's - the restaurant's food is available in the bar.

Driving: from the north on I-5, take the "OMSI/Oregon City" exit. Stay in the right lane and go over the Morrison Bridge. Turn right on 2nd Ave. Turn left on Ash to park (*). You will be one block from Berbati's Pan.

Driving: from the south on I-5, take exit 299A off of I-5. Stay in the left lane and follow signs to the city center (don't take I-405). Turn right on Front Ave (aka Naito Parkway) by the Marriott Hotel. Go about a mile and turn left on Ash. Go two blocks and park (*). You will be one block from Berbati's Pan.

Driving: from the east on I-84 (including airport), as you approach I-5, stay in the center lane and follow it to the left when it splits. Follow signs to city center. Stay in the right lane of the viaduct and go over the Morrison Bridge. Turn right on 2nd Ave. Turn left on Ash to park (*). You will be one block from Berbati's Pan.

Parking: there is a lot one block from Berbati's Pan on Ash Street between 2nd and 3rd Ave. They charge $4 at night. You will probably need quarters to pay the machine. If that lot is full, or you're looking to save money, you can prowl for street parking or go to one of the many similar lots a few blocks south.

Here is some more information on Berbati's Pan.

Captain Ankeny's Well is at 50 SW 3rd Ave, at the corner of 3rd and Ash, just around the corner from Berbati's Pan. They serve pizza by the slice.

Here is some general information for visitors to Portland.

Driving: from the west (ie: LA) on I-10, take the 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) east from downtown Phoenix to the Priest exit. Follow signs to downtown Tempe, which will take you to the right, and then left on Rio Salado Parkway. Make a right on Ash, and follow it a few blocks to 5th St. McDuffy's/Bash On Ash is on the northeast corner, and is surrnounded by parking, which should be free on a weeknight.

Driving: from the east (ie: Tuscon) on I-10, exit at University. Follow University east (right) to Ash, which is about 1/2 to 3/4 mile east of Priest. Go left. It's a couple of blocks down at the corner of 5th St. - you'll see McDuffy's Sports Bar, which is the front half of the building. Bash On Ash is the back half.

There are plenty of hotels and motels around there, as well as food, drink, other entertainment, shopping, etc. If anyone needs more specific information, contact Chris.

One local resident advises: drink bottled water. The tap water is safe to drink here but it has so many minerals in it, it tastes like crap. Local students use it to preserve frogs in biology class. It has a nasty chlorine smell too. In a pinch, though, it's not too bad and will keep you hydrated, especially if the weather's hot - which happens from time to time in Arizona.

Uno's Pizza is in the Centerpoint Shopping Center, just north of University on Mill (west side).

Numbers has no reserve seating - possibly no seating at all. It's on Westheimer a few blocks east of Montrose. From the highway circuit, take the Hwy 527 Spur exit (stay left!) from Hwy 59 (assumes you're heading north - if heading south exit Shepherd and make a U-turn under the freeway), then turn left on Westheimer (first stoplight). Be careful: the sign at this intersection says "Elgin", it turns into Westheimer immediately but it's not labeled as such. Numbers is maybe a 1/4 mile down on the right.

Numbers has a small parking lot that fills quickly. Most of the rest of the parking is on the street in the surrounding neighborhood. Read the signs carefully! Most of the NO PARKING signs have times when it's enforced but some are 24 hours.

The Oven is one block past Numbers at 403 Westheimer (opposite side of the street, see the map) at the intersection of Westheimer and Taft.

Accomodations: the only places to stay within walking distance of Numbers are a couple of bed-and-breakfasts. The closest is The Lovett Inn, about three blocks from Numbers, which is really nice. The nearest big hotel is a Days Inn, a little under a mile away. It's not in a nice neighborhood and walking there is not recommended.

For those with cars, maybe try the Rodeway Inn in the 2700-3000 or so blocks of the Southwest Freeway (also called 59 Highway). It's a real quick drive south following the directions above.

Anyone with more Houston-specific questions is invited to email Doug.

The Club At Firestone is located in downtown Orlando. The club has a sign that identifies the place as the "Firestone Tire And Service Center" - apparently that is what it used to be before being a club, so instead of renaming it they jazzed up the sign and kept the name. It's supposed to be one of the better Orlando clubs according to local DJ's. There is a glass-enclosed 2nd floor.

Mama B's Giant Subs is about a block and a half north of the club, specifically at 692 North Orange Avenue.
